DNS which stands for Domain Name System plays a very integral part in the web’s infrastructure. Each time when you try to visit any website on the internet, your computer runs a DNS lookup in order to successfully help you access the website.

A Public DNS is a service that looks up DNS for the general internet. Anyone with an internet connection can access public DNS, and they are provided by ISP (Internet Service Provider) or third-party companies.

How To Use Google Public DNS On Windows?

For Windows 10

  • From the bottom-right of your screen go to your Internet and Right-click on it.
  • Select Open Network and Sharing Center.
  • From the left side menu, select Change adapter settings.
  • Then right-click on the connection for which you want to change DNS servers.
  • Select Properties.
  • Then make sure you are on the Networking tab.
  • Then under “This connection uses the following items” select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  • Then tap on Properties.
  • Then select “Use the following DNS server address”.
  • Then enter 8.8.8.8 for your Preferred DNS server.
  • Then enter 8.8.4.4 for your Alternate DNS server.
  • Then select OK.

For Windows 11

  • Select Start menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Now on Network and Internet, you need to choose your adapter such as your Wifi card or Ethernet adapter.
  • Go to DNS Server Assignment.
  • Select Edit.
  • Select Automatic (DHCP).
  • Select Manual.
  • Toggle on IPv4.
    • Then enter the following DNS Servers
      • 8.8.8.8
      • 8.8.4.4
  • Select Save.

Note: Above are the Google Public DNS for IPv4 in case you need to Google DNS for IPv6 then enter the 2001:4860:4860::8888 for Preferred DNS and 2001:4860:4860::8844 for Alternate DNS.

How To Use OpenDNS Public DNS On Windows?

For Windows 10

  • From the bottom-right of your screen go to your Internet and Right-click on it.
  • Select Open Network and Sharing Center.
  • From the left side menu, select Change adapter settings.
  • Then right-click on the connection for which you want to change DNS servers.
  • Select Properties.
  • Then make sure you are on the Networking tab.
  • Then under “This connection uses the following items” select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  • Then tap on Properties.
  • Then enter 208.67.222.222 for your Preferred DNS server.
  • Then enter 208.67.220.220 for your Alternate DNS server.
  • Then select OK.

For Windows 11

  • Select Start menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Now on Network and Internet, you need to choose your adapter such as your Wifi card or Ethernet adapter.
  • Go to DNS Server Assignment.
  • Select Edit.
  • Select Automatic (DHCP).
  • Select Manual.
  • Toggle on IPv4.
    • Then enter the following DNS Servers
      • 208.67.222.222
      • 208.67.220.220
  • Select Save.

Note: Above are the OpenDNS Public DNS for IPv4 in case you need to OpenDNS Public DNS for IPv6 then enter the 2620:119:35::35 for Preferred DNS and 2620:119:53::53 for Alternate DNS.

How To Use Cloudflare Public DNS On Windows?

For Windows 10

  • From the bottom-right of your screen go to your Internet and Right-click on it.
  • Select Open Network and Sharing Center.
  • From the left side menu, select Change adapter settings.
  • Then right-click on the connection for which you want to change DNS servers.
  • Select Properties.
  • Then make sure you are on the Networking tab.
  • Then under “This connection uses the following items” select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  • Then tap on Properties.
  • Then enter 1.1.1.1 for your Preferred DNS server.
  • Then enter 1.0.0.1 for your Alternate DNS server.
  • Then select OK.

For Windows 11

  • Select Start menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Now on Network and Internet, you need to choose your adapter such as your Wifi card or Ethernet adapter.
  • Go to DNS Server Assignment.
  • Select Edit.
  • Select Automatic (DHCP).
  • Select Manual.
  • Toggle on IPv4.
    • Then enter the following DNS Servers
      • 1.1.1.1
      • 1.0.0.1
  • Select Save.

Note: Above are the Cloudflare Public DNS for IPv4 in case you need to Cloudflare Public DNS for IPv6 then enter the 2606:4700:4700::1111 for Preferred DNS and 2606:4700:4700::1001 for Alternate DNS.
